Little Black Book: Stephen Briars

Beyond Limits , Derbyshire
Every year the Chatsworth Estate hosts this sculpture exhibition organised by Sotheby's. It's become an annual pilgrimage to see modern pieces by everyone from Magritte to Marc Quinn in a stunning landscape. chatsworth.org

Danish Homestore , Nottingham
An atmospheric shop run by real characters. Simon Harrison is the guy in the know, and can even pronounce all the Danish designers' names. He deals in vintage Danish furniture of every kind and has some real finds. danish-homestore.com

Ace Hotel Palm , Springs
A city in the desert just off the San Andreas fault, Palm Springs is one of those places that fights against nature. It has unique mid-century architecture, including this beautifully conceived hotel fashioned out of a motel. It oozes style. acehotel.com

Bubby's , New York
This small 100-seater eaterie in Tribeca looks as if it's been there for ever. It's open all day and night and has a small menu, but it's a good one - what they call 'American table'. You can't book. bubbys.com

Langar Hall , Nottinghamshire
This isn't your usual corporate country-house hotel but a very English, and unconventional, dotty fun-house. Cocktails in the garden while watching the sun go down is a treat. langarhall.com
